Bing Copeland began surfing in 1949, at age 13. He opened his first surf shop in the fall of 1959 with his friend Rick Stoner and became one of the major surfboard manufactures of the sixties and early seventys. A year after they opened, Rick decided to sell Bing his portion of the business thus came Bing Surfboards. The business grew at an exponential rate . . . and at one point, the factory produced up to 40 surfboards a day. In 1974, G&S took on the license of Bing Surfboards then Mike Eaton continued the Bing legacy through the 80s and 90s. Until one day in Baja in 2000, where Bing and his family spend their winters, Bing was surfing one of his favorite spots and a car pulled up with a group of young guys. One of the guys approached Bing and claimed to owe him some royalty money for some Bing & Rick surfboards that he had made for Rick Surfboards. This young man then offered to make Bings boards if he was ever interested. Bing casually mentioned this to his good friend Mike Eaton, who had been building the boards up until then, and Mike was happy to pass along the legacy to the new generation of surfboard shapers. This young man was Matt Calvani. To this day, Bing and his family live in the mountains of Idaho and spend their winters surfing in the warm waters of southern Baja, not forgetting to stop in on Matt and his surfboard manufacturing team located in Encinitas, CA.

When Degree 33 started in 2006 the goal was to do nothing more than create a part time income selling boards on Craigslist. It was quickly discovered that there was a serious interest in being able to buy surfboards off the internet and that is where the story really began. At the time, Degree 33 was selling boards out of a 1 bedroom apartment in the University City area of San Diego. If you stepped into the place you would have found surfboards everywhere. As with many things, with time comes understanding. Fast forward to today and the evolution of Degree 33 is very apparent. The company has gone from building generic boards with little thought given to shape, design, and build quality, to teaming up with local San Diego legendary shaper of 48 years, Bill Minard, to update, fine-tune, and design our shapes. Having a surfboard designed by a true master means that when you get one of our boards under your feet, it just feels right. We now build all our custom boards here locally in San Diego while our epoxy boards are built overseas like most board manufacturers, a fact few are willing to admit. Regardless, all our boards are built with the same amount of attention to detail. This may or may not be a big issue for you, but we know it is for a lot of surfers. No one wants to see our industry outsourced to another country, and even though the production process has made it nearly impossible to make epoxy boards here, we are building many of our boards right here in San Diego, California. Weve gone from selling boards out of an apartment to a legitimate warehouse and showroom. Come on by and youll see surf videos playing on the wall, a couch for you to kick back on, and a showroom full of surfboards for you to check out. We’re proud of some of the industry firsts we brought as well. We were the very first to offer a Ride-It Guarantee so that you can be confident that the board you invest in will be the right one. We also offer the rare opportunity to spread the cost of your board out over payments. This works like a layaway program, but you get to surf your board before its even paid in full, a concept never heard of in the industry! Most of all, we encourage you to be yourself. We offer a place in the surf community to call your own where its safe to ask silly questions and look for guidance without giving you an elitist attitude. As you move through your journey as a surfer, newbie or ripper, were here to help in every way we can. Our hope is that we do more than that. We aim to build boards that leave you lusting for your next session, a brand that you can identify with, and a family you desire to become a member of. Well never be perfect, but we promise to continue to learn, grow, and evolve. Thanks for joining us on this journey. Welcome to the family.

Jon Pyzel grew up in Santa Barbara, California, started surfing in junior high and quickly found himself deep into it. After traveling for surf, Jon realized he wanted better waves, warmer water, making a permanent move to Oahus North Shore in 1992. A defining moment came a few years later, in 1998. Alex Florence approached Jon about making a board for her oldest son John John, who was 5 at the time. From there forward, Jon and John John worked together to redefine what was possible for Grom surfng. Fast forward almost 20 years and John John Florence is the 2016 World Champ, widely considered the best surfer alive, all while riding Pyzel surfboards. When we think about our company today, we consider JJF as one of the cornerstones to our success, not just for his amazing surfng ability, but also for his loyalty, his humble attitude, his gratitude, and his positive outlook on life. We didin’t start this all to become a giant company, putting out as many “units” as we could, we started it because we love surfing and everything that goes with that – travel to new lands, great friendships, adventure. But most of all we started this because we love surfboards! Today Pyzel Surfboards has grown to be an international business, but is still run by the family. Jon and his wife Dali live on the beach in Hawaii with their 2 daughters, and help run the Pyzel Surfboards factories on the North Shore and in Oceanside, CA. We take great pride in every board we build, and have do our very best to make sure that our customers are getting exactly the right board for what they want to do. We have licensees in 7 countries around the globe, and Jon shapes in Australia, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, South America and California.

We are an experimental brand. We just happen to make sunglasses. A simple experiment with nature. Born from the limb of a Madrone tree, a rusty pair of cabinet hinges, and lenses from the corner store, Shwood has been a curious endeavor from the beginning. An endeavor to create a product that encompasses the individuality and uniqueness that can only be found in natural surroundings. A desire to experiment with design, materials, and aesthetics in the search for something that works. Free from passing trends, the brand’s focus remains that of its roots, innovation and creation. Long live creativity.
