I’m so excited to share the results from the Outdoor Gear Builders of Western North Carolina’s (OGB) 2018 Outdoor Industry Manufacturing Census (census). Although it’s been several months since it was published, the primary thrust of the findings have not changed. If anything, the contribution of these local manufacturers to the local, regional, state, and national economy has likely increased as the economy continues to churn.

The census showed that outdoor gear manufacturing in Western North Carolina continued to create great products and jobs in 2018, and thus tax revenue, all of which benefit the economy in the traditional sense. Yet it’s also important to note that the network (i.e. community) being built by OGB is having ripple effects throughout the region by providing an outlet for collaboration, support, technical assistance, and hosting the Get in Gear Fest.

OGB has over 30 members in 25 North Carolina counties; 33 members were surveyed in 2018. The location of companies surveyed is shown in the map below.

Those surveyed represented 762 jobs, a significant increase of 61% over 2014 figures. Another important trend highlighted in the 2018 census was the increase in local sourcing of materials, now at $8.6 million annually, or more than double that of 2014.

Companies surveyed were of various sizes, although 48% of them had annual revenues of $1 million or more. Only 15% had annual revenues under $100,000. Although this data doesn’t lend insight into their profitability, it proves that these companies are selling product, and a lot of it.

Not only are the companies surveyed selling American-made outdoor gear in all corners of the United States, they are also exporting to eight countries – Norway, South Korea, the UK, Australia, Russia, France, and Japan.

The annual Outdoor Industry Manufacturing Census by Outdoor Gear Builders of Western North Carolina is critical to a better understanding of the dynamics and beneficial impact of a concentrated hub of outdoor gear makers in the United States. I for one am looking forward to the 2019 census.
